  • Will TimberTech decking and railing fade in color?
Yes. Most materials exposed to UV and other weathering effects will fade. TimberTech decking and railing solutions are blended with high quality raw material and UV-inhibiting pigments to minimize fade and produce products consistent in color.
  • Are TimberTech products environmentally friendly?
Yes. Because TimberTech will not splinter, warp or fade the way wood does, it dramatically reduces the wasteful cycle of repair and replacement and eliminates the frequent application of environmentally harmful paint, sealers and stains.
    • TimberTech deck planks are manufactured with recycled wood materials that would otherwise go into landfills. In addition, TimberTech is able to regrind scrap product back into the manufacturing process.
    • TimberTech recycles water during the manufacturing process.
    • Unlike wood, TimberTech products are a one-time purchase for most homeowners, with a 25-year warranty.
    • TimberTech does not require painting, staining or sealing.

  • What kind of fastener should I use with TimberTech?
For installing TimberTech solid planks, we recommend stainless steel or high-quality coated deck screws. For XLM Plank, Earthwood Plank, TwinFinish Plank and ValuPlank: use a minimum #8 x 2-1/2". For DockSider Plank: use a minimum #8 x 3". Refer to our Installation Resources for more information. TimberTech grooved planks are installed using the TimberTech CONCEALoc Hidden Fastener. Follow the directions on the CONCEALoc box or bucket.
  • Can I build my TimberTech deck directly over an existing surface?
See below for minimum space requirements for your TimberTech deck planks:

XLM Plank, Earthwood Plank, DockSider Plank, TwinFinish Plank and ValuPlank

There must be a minimum of a 2" (nominal) sleeper system supported by and connected to the substructure over which the deck is to be built.

    Floorizon Plank

There must be a minimum 12" high unobstructed continuous air space along at least three sides of the deck to allow for cross ventilation. Specific application requirements apply to Floorizon. Please see our Installation Resources for proper ventilation requirements.

  • Can I cantilever TimberTech planks on my deck?
Yes. TimberTech XLM, Earthwood, TwinFinish, DockSider, and ValuPlank can be cantilevered 1” over the last support. TimberTech Floorizon planks should not be cantilevered.
  • Can TimberTech's Floorizon Planks be made into a watertight surface?
No. TimberTech Floorizon is made with weep holes every 9" on the tongue. These weep holes allow water to drain off of the deck. Correct installation of the product with hand pressure gives you approximately a 3/16” gap between the tip of the tongue and the back of the groove of the preceding starter strip or plank. This gap allows the product to expand and contract with temperature changes. If this gap is made watertight by a caulk product, the product will not have the ability to expand and contract in the gap. If your project requires a dry space beneath the deck you can install TimberTech DrySpace.
  • Can I use glue or caulk with TimberTech?
Do not use caulk to fasten TimberTech Floorizon planks or to seal between any of our planks. This will impede the drainage of the plank and inhibit the natural expansion and contraction of the planks. Some contractors have reported success with Premium PL 2000 construction adhesive to support the fastening of other planks, but it is not recommended as the primary means of fastening the planks or fascia. Again, do not use caulk to seal between the planks.
  • Can I install my porch pillars or hot tub on top of my TimberTech deck?
Yes. Please remember the underlying joist system, not the TimberTech planks should be the primary structural supporting mechanism. TimberTech is not to be used as a primary structural load-bearing member.
  • Can I use a router on the TimberTech product?
Yes. If you are installing a solid profile such as our Earthwood, TwinFinish, DockSider, ValuPlank or TwinFascia a router can be used. These TimberTech products will route similar to wood. TimberTech offers a CONCEALoc Router Bit to cut the perfect groove in TimberTech Solid Planks to use our CONCEALoc hidden fastener clips.
  • Can TimberTech products be used as a porch floor?
Yes. Many porches are built with TimberTech products. However, if using Floorizon Plank, special ventilation requirements must be met. There must be a minimum of 12" unobstructed continuous airspace along three sides of the deck to allow cross ventilation for Floorizon Plank. This should be located just below the bottom of the deck joist. Refer to the TimberTech Installation & Maintenance Guide.
  • Can TimberTech be painted or stained?
Although not recommended, TimberTech products may be painted or stained. TimberTech can not guarantee the performance of anything applied to the product. For painting information contact your TimberTech dealer or a local paint supplier. For further information on painting or staining your TimberTech decking refer to our Care and Cleaning Recommendations.
  • My RadianceRail components appear to be two different shades, what should I do?
The two support rails within the kit could appear lighter or darker than the balance of the components. When assembled, these support rails will not be visible so you can proceed with assembling your rails.
  • Are the RadianceRail kits actually a full 6’ and 8’?
Yes. BUT the actual length of the railing assembly must be measured from center of post to center of post. The additional material is provided to allow for angles and end cuts/trimming.
  • I have a chip in the cap stock (outer layer) material on my RadianceRail; can I repair it or touch it up?
Yes. Automotive touch-up paint such as Duplicolor 2 in 1 Scratch Fix works well and is available at most department or automotive retailers. For Coastal White use universal gloss white and for Classic Black use universal flat black.
  • Does TimberTech make a post cover and skirt to match my BuilderRail?
Yes. Use TimberTech’s Ornamental Railing post covers and post skirts in Cedar, Grey and Redwood to complete your railing project. For a full list of accessories visit timbertech.com
    Back To Top
  • Can TimberTech Ornamental Rail and RadianceRail be curved?
Yes, our railing products can be curved in a variety of styles. Click here for details.
  • Can I submerge the landscape lighting lamps in my pool, fountain or pond?
No. Landscape lighting must not be used for this purpose. Use only a system listed for use as submersible fixtures, not DeckLites fixtures.
  • Can I use any 12-volt lamp with my fixtures?
For best results, use the lamp recommended by the manufacturer. Take care not to exceed the fixture lamp wattage rating.
  • How does cable size affect the transformer?
Just like water through a pipe, the larger the cable (number of copper strands), the greater the flow of electricity. If your cable is not rated properly, the transformer will not perform efficiently. Here is a basic guideline: 12/2 cable is rated at 16 amps or 192 watts, 10/2 cable is rated at 24 amps or 288 watts, and 8/2 cable is rated at 32 amps or 384 watts. Do not exceed the rating of the cable.
  • What happens if you are under 12V?
For every volt under 12V, you lose light output. Under 10.5V, the lights become very dim
    Back To Top
  • Why do DeckLites not have a "Clip and Go" system for attaching the wiring together?
Piercing connectors (aka: Clip and Go) are vulnerable to incorrect installation (improper piercing) and/or long-term oxidation resulting in loss of performance. Wire nuts have better long-term reliability than insulation piercing connectors and are commonly used in professionally installed electrical systems.
  • Parts are damaged and/or missing from my newly purchased DeckLites product. What can I do?
Call 1-800-307-7780 and speak to a customer service representative.
  • Are replacement bulbs available for DeckLites?
Replacement bulbs for DeckLites can be found at most TimberTech decking and railing dealers. If replacement bulbs are not located on the shelf, the retailer may order them for you.
  • What is voltage drop?
Voltage drop is caused by the electrical resistance of the cable, which restricts the flow of electricity. The smaller the cable size and the more lights used, the lower the light output will be along the cable. When voltage drop occurs, you may experience insufficient light output, particularly with the lights farthest away from the transformer. Voltage drops can be minimized by switching to a lower gauge of cable.
  • Why do low-voltage lighting systems require a transformer?
You must have a transformer to reduce the 120-volt AC home current to a safe 12 volts AC. Do not attempt to hook up a line of 12-volt lamps directly to an ordinary home outlet without using a 12-volt transformer.
  • What is the maximum length of cable I can attach to my transformer?
Follow the 50-foot rule: no more than 50 feet between your first and last fixture. Longer runs of cable can result in lower light output near the end of the cable; therefore, you should use heavier cable or shorter runs to ensure maximum light output. Most important, you must never use cable that is smaller than that listed in the table for your transformer.
  • Why are my lights dim at the end of the run?
The greater the distance between the transformer and the fixture, the greater the voltage drop. Follow the 50-foot rule: no more than 50 feet between your first and last fixture.
  • How do you check the transformer for proper voltage?
The best way to check for proper voltage is with a volt-meter.
  • Why do all my lights blink on and off continuously?
The transformer is overloaded. It automatically cycles to prevent overheating. Make sure the total lamp watts do not exceed the transformer rating. Since high wattage replacement bulbs may have been installed, you may need to examine each bulb instead of using the wattage marked on the fixture.
  • How many lights can I have on one 300W TimberTech transformer?
You may have a maximum of 30 (10-watt) lights per transformer. If you need additional lights you will need to purchase a second transformer.
  • Can I use the same voltage tap more than one time?
You may use the various voltage taps as often as needed. Example: If you need to use the 15-volt tap three times, simply connect all three cables to the 15-volt tap. However, we do recommend that you limit the wattage on any single tap to a maximum of 300 watts.
  • Are low-voltage lights safe around children and pets?
Yes. Low-voltage lights are safe. Since they operate on 12-volt electrical current as compared to conventional 120-volt systems, there is no fear of shock. In fact, the system may be installed with the transformer turned on so that lights can be tested as they're connected.
  • Does TimberTech have a submersible light for ponds and fountains?
No. DeckLites cannot be used for pools, spas or hot tubs.
  • What happens if you are over 12V?
If your circuit operates over 12V (with a multi-tap transformer), you will run the risk of voltage overload and diminish the rated life of the bulb.
  • What does the statement "First fixture must be 10 feet from transformer" mean and why?
You must have at least 10 feet of cable between the first fixture and the power pack to avoid premature bulb burn out. The cable may be buried, but coiling must not be done.
  • Can I add a photocell and timer to my TimberTech transformer?
The TimberTech transformer already contains a photocell and timer for your convenience.
  • Is there a positive or negative in the wires or cables?
Yes. There is polarity in the wiring. Refer to our Installation Resources for complete details on wiring your deck and loop system.
  • Can you connect a transformer to an electrical outlet with an extension cord?
No. It must not be done.
  • Should transformers be used to their full capacity?
Yes. As the load decreases, the output voltage of the transformer increases. Therefore, the life of low-voltage lamps will be shortened unless the transformer is carrying close to its rated capacity. The rule of thumb is to use at least half the transformer's wattage rating.
  • What is the difference between voltage, amperage and wattage?
Here is a simple way to remember the difference. Think of a car as a metaphor: (1) Voltage can be considered the speed of which the current flows (or the accelerator); (2) Amperage is the amount of power the system can accommodate (or the car engine); (3) Wattage is the unit of measurement of the light bulb itself (or the gas consumed).
  • Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?
Make sure that the circuit breaker amperage is suitable for the transformer. At times, there might be multiple appliances connected to the same breaker causing an overload.
  • How close can I install low-voltage lighting fixtures to my swimming pool?
For maximum safety, the lights and cables are UL approved to be installed not less than ten feet from the edge of the pool. The transformer must be equipped with a ground shield. Your TimberTech transformer has a ground shield.
  • What is a multi-tap transformer?
A multi-tap transformer has multiple voltage tap options to offset voltage drop. Multi-tap transformers generally are offered in 12-15V options. TimberTech's 300W, 12-volt transformer has a 12V, 13V, 14V and 15V tap.
  • Can TimberTech transformers be installed indoors?
No. Transformers are listed as outdoor products only by Underwriter Laboratories and the Canadian Standards Association.
  • Will the DrySpace Combo Bracket or Joist Cover cause my deck to rot?
No. When properly installed the Combo Bracket or Joist Cover channels water away from the house and out of the Combo Bracket or Joist Cover. This also allows for airflow between the Combo Bracket or Joist Cover and joist.
  • Can I paint DrySpace?
We would not recommend it because of the maintenance issues, but yes DrySpace can be painted.
  • Can I splice panels together to save material?
No. There is no way to make a joint between the Joist Covers and/or Panels that will prevent leaks. DrySpace comes in 12’ and 16’ lengths that allow for seamless installations. The 16’ kits are ideal for DrySpace installations where the joist cavities are 8' long.
  • Can I install a more decorative ceiling under DrySpace?
No. That would require penetrating the Joist Covers with nails or screws.
  • Could I install DrySpace by using F-Brackets only and not the Combo Bracket (Joist Cover/F-Bracket combo)?
No. The Combo Bracket (Joist Cover/F-Bracket Combo) must be used to collect any water that drains through or around the joist.
  • Can I run the Panels over the top of a beam?
Panels must always stop 3” from the beam. In most cases the low point of the Panel will interfere with the beam causing water to dam on the Panel. Combo Brackets and Joist Covers should stop 1” from the beam. For more information on beams, refer to our Installation Instructions.
  • I have a support beam 3' from my house. Can I run the Panels over the top of the beam?
While the Panels would clear the beam 3' from the house, the Joist Covers must terminate at the beam. The Panels should also be trimmed at this point. Because the Joist Cover is a gutter any water that drains from the Joist Covers should be collected with a K-style gutter.
  • Will chemical treatments or stains damage DrySpace?
No. Common, off-the-shelf stains and chemical wood cleaning treatments have no adverse effects on DrySpace.
  • Can I use TimberTech DrySpace with TimberTech Floorizon Deck Planks?
Yes. With proper installation, TimberTech DrySpace can be used with Floorizon Planks. The moisture will be carried away from underneath the Floorizon Planks. It is the moisture underneath the Floorizon Planks that could cause cupping. In addition, since the V-Panels are cut 3" from the beam or rim joist, there should be some air flow around the planks.
  • My deck was constructed with pitch away from the house. Can I install the Joist Covers tight to the bottom of the joist?
No. The Combo Bracket and Joist Cover is a gutter that does collect water. When the Combo Bracket or Joist Cover is installed tight to the bottom of the joist, water cannot freely flow from the Combo Bracket or Joist Covers.
  • Can I install DrySpace by myself?
Yes. Complete, easy-to-follow instructions come with your DrySpace purchase or you can refer to our Online Installation Resources. Installation is easiest with two people. You are likely to have the tools and materials you need, or they are easy to find at your local hardware store.
  • Do I need to gap my planks when I'm using CONCEALoc Hidden Fasteners?
The CONCEALoc fasteners provide consistent spacing between the sides of the planks. You will need to gap the ends at all butt joints per our Installation & Maintenance Guide, which can be found in the Installation Resources section of our Web site.
  • Is there a CONCEALoc Hidden Fastener installation video available?
Yes. View the "Grooved Planks - CONCEALoc" video on our web site in the Installation Resources section.
  • What tools are required to install the CONCEALoc Hidden Fasteners?
No special tools are required when using TimberTech grooved planks - just a drill/driver. We provide a #1 square drive bit with the screws and CONCEALoc clips. If using TimberTech solid planks, a route with TimberTech's CONCEALoc router bit will be needed to create a groove at each joist. You can find complete details on how to install CONCEALoc in grooved and solid planks in TimberTech's online Installation Resources.
  • What are the CONCEALoc Hidden Fasteners made of?
The CONCEALoc fasteners are made from .060 304 stainless steel. This material, with its high nickel content, will ensure a long life even in harsh environments.
  • Can CONCEALoc Hidden Fasteners be used on angles?
Yes. Any angle up to 45 degrees can be achieved. On angles; offset the center of the fastener ½” towards the long point of the joist, so the screw will not exit the side of the joist when driven. Reference our Installation Resources for additional details.
  • Is it possible to replace a plank installed with CONCEALoc Hidden Fasteners, if it gets damaged after installation?
Yes. You can find complete details on how to do this in the TimberTech Online Installation Resources.
  • What can be used to clean spot stains such as oil, grease and other stains?
Oil Eater® Cleaner and Degreaser is very effective against oil, grease and other stains. For extra heavy oil and grease stains or other specific stain types, check with your local lumberyards, hardware stores or home centers for cleaners applicable to a specific stain type. On TimberTech products (except Earthwood Plank, Floorizon Plank in Rosewood, Teak and Walnut colors, BuilderBoard, BuilderRail, Ornamental Rail and RadianceRail): if stains have set you may want to use a fine sandpaper and sand lightly, following the wood grain finish of the plank. The sanded area will weather back in approximately 8-10 weeks.
  • What can be done to remove scratches, nicks, cuts and grooves from my TimberTech deck?
For all TimberTech products (except Earthwood Plank, Floorizon Plank in tropical colors, BuilderBoard, BuilderRail, RadianceRail and Ornamental Rail) scratches, nicks, cuts and grooves can be eliminated by using a wire brush. Brushing will need to be consistent with the grain of the product.

For Earthwood Plank and Floorizon Plank in Rosewood, Teak and Walnut, surface scratches and abrasions will fade after weathering. Once these planks have fully weathered, they are more resistant to visible scratching. For minor scratches, you can use a soldering iron such as the LSP-25 (manufactured by Wall Lenk Corp.) to melt and return the scratch back to the original color. Try on a sample piece first. Use soldering iron with caution. Click here to view the TimberTech Care and Cleaning Recommendations.

  • What can be used to clean rust, ground-in dirt and grime from my TimberTech deck?
Use a cleaner that contains Phosphoric Acid or Oxalic Acid. This type of cleaner is available at home centers, lumberyards or hardware stores. Follow the manufacturer’s application instructions.

On TimberTech products (except Earthwood Plank, Floorizon Plank in tropical colors, BuilderBoard, BuilderRail, and the RadianceRail and Ornamental Rail Systems): if the stains have set, you may use fine sandpaper and sand lightly followed by a wire brush to re-grain the decking (this applies to brushed surfaces only). Always follow the wood grain finish. The sanded area will weather back in approximately 8-10 weeks but can vary depending on location and specific application.
