Thinking about replacing your tired old wooden deck or having a new one installed? Then you might be surprised by all of the decking options available—the decking industry has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, with new products being rolled out that last longer and look better than wood. One such product is PVC decking.
This guide will introduce you to it and all of its advantages.
PVC, the No-Wood Deck
PVC decking products are made from polyvinyl chloride, a man-made synthetic resin created through the polymerization of vinyl chloride. It contains absolutely no wood and is one of the most widely used plastics in the world.
PVC decking is made through a process called co-extrusion. This process involves the pressing of two or more materials through the same die to produce a single piece.
In the case of decking boards, the deck board core is coated and bound with an outer plastic shell. This is a very delicate production process that is so complex that approximately one-eighth of the boards produced are considered unsellable.
Is PVC Decking the Same as Composite Decking?
No. PVC is an all-plastic product while composite decking materials consist of a wood and plastic blend. Of the two, composite is slightly easier to work with because it can be routed, ripped, and bent whereas PVC cannot. Special tools are needed to bend PVC decking if needed for certain applications.
Benefits of PVC Decking
Why is it so Important for PVC Decking to be “Capped?”
PVC decking that is not capped is traditional, naked PVC, which is extraordinarily strong in its own right. But capped PVC decking, on the other hand, features an extra protective layer that further protects the product from stains, scratches, mildew, mold, and insects.
Capped PVC decking is also guaranteed against cracking, cupping, and other problems that can plague similar decking materials.
