Imagine walking past treetops and rooftops to stand at the invisible edge of the world, to view the Pacific Ocean on one side and a dynamic cityscape on the other. Vacation home owners in La Jolla, California, dared to dream that such a breathtaking experience could be created on their steep hillside property. Then they found deck builder, Blake Carter, who took on replacing a small hardwood deck around the pool with a high-performance AZEK®Deck that made their dream a reality.  He also brought amenities only found indoors to their new “sky deck.”

Carter and his crew encountered steep grades—often more than 45 degrees— and daring heights to deliver a 2,000-square-foot elevated deck unlike any other.  “The homeowner originally wanted to use composite decking,” says Carter, adding he also used AZEK boards for the fascia, “but I recommended we instead use AZEK PVC decking in Island Oak color because it is the easiest material to curve and has the most natural finish. It heats quicker, bends easier and doesn’t wrinkle or break as a capped composite might when you try to bend it.”

He flew a drone over the property’s hilly edge to help the homeowners envision how it would feel to stand on what was then simply air space. When the views were better than they’d hoped, the deck was redesigned to extend 30 feet from the house to make the experience permanent. Now, when they’re in town, they enjoy time on the deck with a bird’s-eye view over the Pacific Ocean.  As the Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze song says, “‘Scuse me while I kiss the sky!”
