What Are the Spacing Requirements for TimberTech Deck Planking?

Decking Design & Planning

This is a question we get asked quite often by homeowners. While the side to side spacing is consistent regardless of temperatures at the point of installation; the end to end gapping varies by temperature. Side to side plank spacing is defined at a minimum of 1/8”. Your choice of fasteners may result in a slightly wider space between the planks. For example, TimberTech CONCEALoc and Hidden Fasteners provide a space of 1/8” - 3/16” between the planks. TimberTech FUSIONLoc Hidden Fasteners will provide 3/16” spacing between the planks.

Gapping requirements at the end of planks vary based on temperatures at the point of initial installation. It’s important to follow these requirements during installation to accommodate for temperature-related expansion and contraction. For example, if you’re installing at temperatures in the range of 33° F to 74° F, you would gap the planks 1/8” at the butt-joints.  Additionally, the installation guide defines a requirement of 3/16” minimum gap where the planking meets any adjoining structure or post.
