SCRANTON, PA—A new AZEK Paver walkway was installed at the Veterans Exploration Garden in Speicher Memorial Park, San Bernardino, CA, on Thursday, June 19th 2014. The 4 X 100 sq. ft. walkway will provide smoother wheelchair access to the Garden while being easier to maintain than traditional pavers. Made with up to 95% recycled materials, the environmentally friendly paver walkway fits in nicely with the organic garden.

Managed by the non-profit Disabled American Veterans San Bernardino Chapter 12, disabled veterans in the region have found tending the vegetable gardens and fruit trees to be a therapeutic way to heal and de-stress. It’s also a way to share with the community by providing produce to other veterans and people in need.According to Richard Valdez, a former U.S. Marine who oversees the garden, this is a sanctuary for veterans suffering from injuries and post-traumatic stress, providing an outlet and something to care about.

The new walkway was installed by volunteers from Team Depot, The Home Depot’s associate-led volunteer force, as part of SPRING into Service, a season-long initiative to plant edible gardens that will provide fresh fruits and vegetables for veterans across the country. The walkway is also co-sponsored by AZEK Building Products, manufacturer of the unique recycled pavers, and by OrePac, a leading western distributor of building materials.

“We are privileged to be able to give back to our veterans who have served so bravely by adding this AZEK Paver walkway to their garden,” said Jason Grommon, President of CPG Building Products which encompasses AZEK Building Products and TimberTech, both leading building material manufacturers.

With low-maintenance, beauty and durability, AZEK Pavers are stain-, impact- and scratch-resistant and save on installation time and labor compared to traditional concrete and clay pavers. Fitting into an innovative grid system and at less than half the weight of traditional pavers, they install up to three times faster than other pavers, with no special tools or masonry wet saws required. To date, AZEK Paver manufacturing is responsible for keeping more than 1 million scrap tires and more than 34 million plastic containers out of U.S. landfills.
