For the 2017 Southern Style Now Showhouse, Traditional Home magazine featured a beautifully executed remodel that strikes a perfect balance between faithful restoration and modern improvement, bridging the gap in more ways than one.

Built in 1854, the 5,500-square-foot, four-level Greek Revival home is nestled away in Savannah’s Landmark Historic District overlooking charming Monterey Square. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the home retains many of its original architectural details, including marble fireplaces, plaster moldings, and heart-pine floors.

At one point in the building’s history, the residence had been divided into four separate apartments, and converting it back into a single-family home was a major part of the renovation. The design team also brought welcome new additions to the home such as transforming the space above the garage into a rooftop deck and connecting it to the main residence with a custom sky bridge. These new features were a perfect opportunity for AZEK Building Products, the parent company of TimberTech, to tell a compelling story, and add tasteful modern upgrades to this treasured vintage residence.

“With a historic home, material choice is always an important consideration. TimberTech materials literally provided the bridge between the 160-year-old house and the new rooftop deck,” said Matthew Allan, Developer of the Showhouse and founder of Matthew Allan Real Estate. “Any concerns about using a modern decking surface disappeared when we saw the durability, flexibility, and visual compatibility of TimberTech’s products.”

AZEK Deck’s Vintage Collection complements TimberTech’s Evolutions Rail Contemporary in Black with round Aluminum Balusters to create the stunning outdoor space. All of these high-quality building products are 100% Smarter Than Wood™ meaning they are virtually maintenance-free, and guaranteed to retain their beauty and last for decades.

The 2017 Southern Style Now Showhouse is a spectacular case study of how a remodel of a historic house can successfully bridge past and present for a home that truly represents the best of both worlds.
