When we say we’re sustainable to the core, that’s exactly what we mean. Up to 80% of the cores in our composite decking boards and up to 54% of the cores in our PVC boards are made with recycled products. And, we’re not stopping there. At TimberTech, we’re committed to doing whatever it takes to up our eco-friendly game – like investing in a state-of-the-art recycling plant, increasing the amount of recycled content in each decking line, and repurposing the scraps from our board-making process back into production.

Our Sustainability Pledge

At TimberTech, 'Sustainability is at Our Core' is more than just a tagline. To us, creating sustainable deck materials is a responsibility that we have to our customers, our employees, and our planet. Where some businesses care more about the bottom line than the environment, we Go Against the Grain to produce sustainable products in a sustainable way. We don’t approach every business decision based solely on our profits for the next quarter — instead, we strive to meet the needs of our customers today without compromising our ability to deliver the highest-quality products to future generations.

We’ve come a long way, but our work is far from done. Our goal is to reach 95% recycled materials in all our TimberTech decking boards by 2020. Our promise is to never settle for good enough. Our pledge is to always strive to push our sustainability further.

Our Sustainable Deck Materials: By the Numbers

If it can’t be reduced, repaired, rebuilt, refurbished, refinished, resold, recycled, or composted, then it should be restricted, redesigned, or removed from production.

Our Commitment to Sustainable Production

In 2019, we continued to prove our commitment to sustainability with the unveiling of our 100,000+ square-foot recycling facility in Wilmington Ohio. At this eco-friendly space, our team is dedicated to turning recycled materials into gorgeous outdoor living products.

After opening in April, the TimberTech Recycling plant got up to speed quickly. In the summer of 2019, the plant was already capable of recycling more than 55 million pounds of Polyethylene type plastic (think shampoo bottles, milk jugs, plastic wraps, etc.).

Bringing Sustainable Deck Materials to Life

So, how do we turn this…

... into this?

Sustainable Deck Materials-The End Product.jpg

Like most of the things we do, it starts with technology. We incorporated advanced technologies from Europe, the leader in sustainability and recycling, into our manufacturing line for peak efficiency. This technology allows us to turn recycled products into raw materials that we can then mold into beautiful composite decking materials.

We also leverage energy-efficient systems for power, water, heating/cooling, and lighting at the plant, which makes it even more sustainable. On top of that, we use a unique closed-loop water filtration system across our manufacturing plants allowing us to recycle and reuse hundreds of gallons of water each day.
