With six kids nearly all grown, finding time to see all of them can be a challenge for pro skater, Tony Hawk and his wife Cathy. So when three of his boys wanted to live in the Los Angeles area, they decided buying a home they could all share was a great solution. “We wanted to have a place that would be more central to all the places in LA they’d end up working,” Tony said, “but mostly so we could have a place to visit them all at once.” Knowing the back yard and deck is the space the boys would use most, Tony knew they needed something that was as durable as it was beautiful — and that was TimberTech.

Tony Hawk (aka Birdman to his fans) is arguably the most recognizable and influential professional skateboarder. A pioneer of modern vertical skateboarding, Tony is actively involved in the development of the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater video game series. He’s also an entrepreneur and owner of the skateboard company Birdhouse. Born and raised in San Diego, CA, Tony currently lives in Encinitas with his wife, Cathy — together, they have six children.

“I was not aware that Timber Tech was more sustainable than wood until we actually got into building the deck,” Tony remembers, “so I felt much better about it honestly.” He chose sustainable Advanced PVC in Castle Gate from the Landmark Collection. “The look and the texture were exactly what we were looking for,” Tony added. “I was excited; and, now that I see it, it’s even better than I imagined.”
No matter how much water splashes out of the hot tub, Tony and his family never have to worry about moisture damage. Moisture-resistant TimberTech Advanced PVC is made with zero organic material — so it won’t absorb moisture and isn’t susceptible to mold and mildew.
“The TimberTech Pros were very thorough with all of our options,” Tony said. These Riser Lights, for example, improve visibility on the stairs and pair perfectly with the Post Cap and Small Accent lights added to the railing. “We’re more than happy — it was on time, built well, and it looks perfect.”

“Obviously, in Los Angeles, there are fire hazards,” Tony said. “So it was really important to have fire-resistant materials.” By combining fire-resistant Advanced PVC Decking from the Landmark Collection with non-combustible Aluminum Framing and Impression Rail Express Railing Tony found the total solution for a fire-resistant deck. “There have been a lot of compromises with this house,” he added, “but with the deck there were no compromises.”
Whether it’s around corners, on stairs, or in wet conditions, TimberTech Advanced PVC is up to 40% more slip resistant than competitive composites. “We’re used to slipping and falling by choice, but I didn’t want that to be a risk when they walk out,” Tony said. “The friction on the deck is perfect.”
Versatile Impression Rail Express Railing can be styled to match a wide range of home looks. “My wife and I were goth, industrial kids, and felt it has a very industrial vibe” he said. “It complements the deck perfectly.”
“The deck IS the backyard.” Tony said. “The old one was falling apart and looked like your foot would go through it.” Replacing the wood deck with durable Advanced PVC Decking and our innovative Aluminum Framing gave Tony the solid feel he was looking for. “I skate a lot of ramps, so I know wood construction,” he said. “There’s no give here.”

“The most important aspect of this deck is that it’s low maintenance,” he said. “We don’t have to worry about weather conditions or anything.” With no need to sand, stain, or seal — ever — Tony’s boys just have to sweep it and give it a good washing every year.
